Claudia’s story
Claudia Mathieu, 37, told a friend she was going kayaking from Dana Point on her day off, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997. That day a small-craft advisory was in effect and strong northeast winds were blowing. The next morning, her friend found her white Toyota RAV4 parked at their usual launch spot with her German shepherd, Layla, locked in a cage inside. Claudia’s kayak was gone. [1][3][4]
The Coast Guard searched about a thousand square miles of ocean over two days and found no sign of her or the kayak. No one has ever said they saw her launch. [4][5]
Who Claudia was
Claudia grew up in the Chicago area. For about eight months she had worked at Dana Niguel Veterinary Hospital, running the kennels and bathing animals. Before that she spent roughly four years at a hardware store in Newport Beach, where the manager became her friend and kayaking partner. [4]
He described her as an experienced recreational kayaker without much rough-water experience. Colleagues and family said she was in good spirits and doubted she would have paddled into dangerous seas, or left Layla behind in the car. [4][5]
She was 5’0”, with short brown hair, green eyes and wire-rim glasses. [3]
What happened
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Claudia told her friend she planned to paddle the next day. That conversation is the last confirmed contact anyone has reported. [4]
On Wednesday evening he called her and got no answer. On Thursday morning, after calling around and checking her apartment, he went to their usual spot by Doheny State Beach and found her car, with Layla caged inside. Friends later said the dog was muzzled, which they found out of character. [4][5]
The Coast Guard and Orange County Harbor Patrol searched by air and sea on Thursday and Friday, including with a C-130 aircraft. They dropped floating markers to model the currents and covered a reported 1,000 to 1,200 square miles between Dana Point and Catalina. The search was suspended at 5:16 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12. Bloodhounds couldn’t pick up a trail on shore because the wind had scattered the scent. Her gray kayak, with a black seat, has never been found. [4][5][6]
Where it happened
Dana Point Harbor and neighboring Doheny State Beach sit side by side on the south Orange County coast. The official record says her car was in the Dana Point Harbor parking lot; her friend described it as their usual spot near Doheny. These may be the same place, but no source pins down the exact lot. [1][4]
What investigators have said
The Sheriff’s Department says it appears Claudia may have kayaked into the ocean against strong winds and rough water. That is a possibility, not a finding. In 1997 a sheriff’s captain said the case had been routinely assigned to a homicide detective and that there was no evidence of foul play. Officials acknowledged it was unusual that the kayak was never found, but said it could have drifted beyond the search area or washed up unreported. [1][5]
Where accounts differ
- Birth date: Nov. 11, 1960 (Sheriff’s Department) or Nov. 21, 1960 (state DOJ). [1][2]
- Clothing: a blue “wet vest” (state), a blue “ski vest” (federal) or a blue jacket (1997 news). None establishes what she wore on Dec. 10. [2][3][4]
- Search area: about 1,200 square miles in one 1997 report; about 1,000 in the next day’s. [4][6]
Open questions
- Did anyone see Claudia on Dec. 10, at the harbor, on the water or anywhere else?
- Why would an experienced dog handler leave Layla muzzled in a cage in the car?
- Where was the kayak normally kept, and was it definitely taken that day?
What you can do
- If you were at Dana Point Harbor or Doheny State Beach on Dec. 10, 1997, or found a gray kayak with a black seat washed up anywhere after that date, contact the Sheriff’s Department.
- Research: NOAA’s historical buoy data for Dec. 9–11, 1997 can show the actual wind and sea conditions off Dana Point. The Coast Guard’s search-and-rescue case record can be requested.
